Your Emotional Home: Who Do You Become When Pressure Hits?

Think about yourself on a really good day.

You’re calm, you’re confident, you’re patient, and you’re getting things done. You’re communicating well. Nothing is really getting under your skin.

Then something happens.

A customer blows up, a deal you thought was a sure thing falls apart or your manager throws another problem at you. Or let’s say your phone won’t stop ringing, traffic is a nightmare or someone you care about says exactly the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time.

And suddenly, you’re a different person. That’s when you retreat into your Emotional Home, and let’s face it…sometimes it’s not pretty.

Your Emotional Home is the place your emotions and mindset tend to go, especially when you’re under pressure. When life is calm, you may operate from a pretty healthy, balanced place, but when stress kicks in, you may automatically drop into a different headspace and fall into some pretty negative energy..

Here’s the important part and the point of today’s blog post: You need to know where you go.

Because you can’t change a pattern you don’t recognize.

So, Where Do You Go?

The Energy Leadership Index, used in coaching through iPEC (Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching, where I received my professional leadership coaching license), founded by Bruce Schneider, looks at seven different levels of energy. Each one has a different way of seeing the world, reacting to problems and dealing with other people. And we all experience them when things are going well, and when they aren’t. The question is this: where do you live when everything’s a-ok, and where do you go when you experience stress?

At Level 1, you’re in victim energy: the “Why me?” level.

You feel like things are happening to you. You may think you don’t have a choice or that there’s nothing you can do.

In everyday life, it might sound like, “Of course this would happen to me.”

On a dealership floor, it might sound like, “That customer was never going to buy,” or “It’s not my fault”, or “Management screwed this deal up.”

At Level 2, you move into conflict and anger: the “Are you serious?!” level.

You’re frustrated, you’re defensive, you want to prove your point or win the argument. We’ve all seen this one.

A customer questions a price and the salesperson pushes back and has to win the argument. An advisor gets defensive with a frustrated customer. A manager jumps into the conversation and talks down to their team member. Ten minutes later, what started as a simple concern has turned into a battle.

Then there’s Level 3: coping and rationalizing: the “Oh well, that’s just the way it is” level.

You’re no longer fighting the situation. You’re trying to deal with it. At least that’s progress, because you’re starting to take responsibility and figure out how to work around the problem instead of spending all your energy just being pissed off about it. But you still shrug your shoulders and guess you just have to suck it up.

Level 4 is care and compassion: the question now changes to, “How can I help?” - now you’re focused on genuinely serving the other person.

Think about a service customer who’s upset about a repair bill. Instead of immediately defending the dealership, you slow down and try to understand what’s bothering them and have the desire to be genuinely helpful.

That shift can completely change the conversation.

Level 5 is solution-focused energy: this is where you start asking, “How can we make this a win-win?” The problem becomes a puzzle you get to solve together.

A sales objection isn’t something you have to beat. It’s just information. It’s a customer who says, “I need to think about it,” and gives you something to understand, not something to fight. Some of the most successful people live at this level most of the time.

Level 6 is connection and intuition: where you start seeing more possibilities. You’re less focused on controlling everything and more comfortable trusting yourself, the process and the people around you.

You see that you are part of a bigger picture and contribute to making the whole wheel turn.

And finally, there’s Level 7: absolute passion and creation: a state of deep passion, connection and flow. You’re not stuck in judgment or reaction. You can access the other energy levels without getting trapped by them. And you are able to move fluidly between them when needed.

Here’s the part that’s most interesting: You don’t permanently live at one level. You can experience all seven at different degrees at the same time.

The real question is this: Where do you go when you’re triggered? This is where your personal power comes in, because when you know this, you get to choose whether you WANT to go there or not. And you get to choose a different response.

Find Your Stress Pattern

When everything is going well, it’s easy to think, “I’m pretty calm. I’m good under pressure.” And maybe you are. However, that’s not really the test.

The test is what happens when you’re frustrated, exhausted, embarrassed, scared or feeling completely out of control. Which of these sounds most like your response in these situations?

  • Do you blame?

  • Do you get angry?

  • Do you shut down?

  • Do you try to just struggle through it?

  • Do you look for a solution?

  • Do you seek to connect with the other person that may have triggered you?

  • Do you see it as an opportunity to learn and grow?

That’s where you start to see your Emotional Home, and more times than not, your Emotional Home under stress can have consequences.

In a dealership, dropping into lower-energy reactions can cost you a sale. It can damage CSI or worse, your store’s reputation. It can create unnecessary drama between departments. It can turn a small customer concern into a full-blown problem.

But it’s not just about work. The same thing can happen at home.

You feel overwhelmed or hurt and shut down feeling like a victim and completely powerless. Or you get stressed and blow up at someone you love, and you make an emotional decision you regret later.

Then, once you calm down, you think, “What the hell was that?”

Sound familiar?

Your Trigger Doesn’t Get to Drive

Here’s the good news.: your Emotional Home isn’t permanent.

You can change the way you respond…the first step is simply noticing where you went.

Maybe your first reaction is anger. Okay. Notice it.

Maybe your first thought is, “Why does this always happen to me?” Notice that too.

Maybe you immediately want to defend yourself. Pause. Take a breath. Then ask yourself, “What’s really happening here?”

That little pause is extremely important, because there’s a space between the trigger and the response. That’s where your power is.

The goal isn’t to never get angry, frustrated or stressed - that’s unrealistic. The goal is to stop letting those emotions make every decision for you.

The strongest and most successful people with the highest level of overall life satisfaction aren’t the ones who never get triggered. They’re the ones who recognize the trigger, recognize where they went and choose what happens next.

Know Your Emotional Home

The next time something gets under your skin, don’t only ask: “Why am I upset?” Instead, ask: “Where did I just go?”

That single question can tell you a hell of a lot about yourself. And NOW you have something to work with.

Know your Emotional Home. Know what triggers it. Know what it looks like when you get there.

And most importantly, remember this: you don’t have to stay there.

  • You can take a breath.

  • You can reset.

  • You can choose another response.

  • You can choose the next level.

And that ability to choose who you become when stress hits you is where true personal excellence begins.
